Magnesium alloy steel plate and sheet
Magnesium alloy steel sheet is a flat metal material mainly composed of magnesium (Mg), with the addition of other alloying elements such as aluminum, zinc, manganese, zirconium, rare earth elements, etc., and processed through a series of processes including melting, casting (usually into flat ingots), hot rolling, and cold rolling.
Main Advantages:
1. Extremely low density
2. Higher specific strength and stiffness
3. Good damping and vibration reduction performance
4. Good castability and machinability
5. Good electromagnetic shielding performance
6. Good thermal conductivity and heat dissipation
7. Relatively abundant and recyclable resources
Production process for Magnesium alloy sheet
1. Smelting and Casting: Smelting high-purity magnesium ingots with other alloying elements in a protective atmosphere and casting them into large-sized flat ingots (DC Casting) suitable for rolling.
2. Homogenization annealing: * * Eliminating compositional segregation and internal stress inside the ingot.
3. Hot rolling: * * Repeatedly roll thick flat ingots into medium thickness slabs at high temperatures (300 ° C-450 ° C). This step is the most critical and challenging.
4. Edge cutting and intermediate annealing: Remove edge cracks caused by hot rolling, intermediate annealing eliminates work hardening, and restores plasticity.
5. Warm rolling/Cold rolling: * * For sheets that require thinner specifications or higher strength, further roll to the target thickness at lower temperatures (Warm rolling: 150 ° C-300 ° C; Cold rolling: room temperature). Cold rolling usually requires multiple passes and intermediate annealing.
6. Finishing: including straightening, shearing, surface cleaning, etc.
7. Heat treatment: Depending on the alloy grade and final performance requirements, annealing (O state), solution treatment (T4 state), aging treatment (T5, T6 state), etc. may be performed.
8. Surface treatment: * * Basic protection (such as chromization or chromium free chemical conversion) is usually carried out before leaving the factory, or deeper surface treatment is carried out according to customer requirements.
Common grades (commonly used for alloy steel sheet)
*AZ33B: The most commonly used and economical deformed magnesium alloy sheet. Containing Al~3%, Zn~1%, Mn~0.2-0.5%. Has good strength, ductility, and comprehensive performance. The most widely used.
*AZ61A: The aluminum content (~6%) is higher than AZ31, with higher strength but slightly lower plasticity.
*AZ80A: It has a higher aluminum content (~8%) and can achieve higher strength through aging treatment, but its plasticity is worse.
*ZK60A: Contains Zn~5.5% and Zr~0.45%. High strength, especially high yield strength, good corrosion resistance, but poor plasticity and high cost.
*WE43: Contains rare earth elements (Y~4%, Nd~3%) and Zr. It has good high-temperature strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and high cost. Mainly used in high-end fields such as aerospace.
*M1A: Contains Mn~1.5%. Low strength, but good corrosion resistance and weldability.
Main Application Areas
*Aerospace: Aircraft cabin structural components (seat frames, brackets), skins, instrument panels, radar covers, helicopter parts, etc. (using lightweight and vibration reduction).
*Automotive industry: Instrument panel bracket, steering column bracket, seat frame, transmission housing (automatic transmission), door panel, roof bracket, wheel hub (high-end/modified), new energy vehicle battery pack housing (huge potential), etc. (utilizing lightweight weight reduction, energy-saving, vibration reduction and noise reduction).
*3C Electronics: Laptop case, tablet back panel, phone frame/back panel, camera body, projector case, hard drive top cover, etc. (utilizing lightweight, heat dissipation, electromagnetic shielding, strength, texture).
** * Military equipment: * * Portable weapon holders, individual equipment components, radar, communication equipment housings, etc. (using lightweight, vibration reduction, shielding).
*Sports equipment: bicycle frames, wheels, tennis rackets, skis, bows and arrows, etc. (utilizing lightweight and strength).
*Medical Devices: Wheelchair components, portable medical equipment casings, surgical instrument trays, etc. (utilizing lightweight, shock absorption, biocompatibility - requiring special handling).
*Printing and Tools: Printing plates, manual tool housings, etc.
Magnesium alloy sheet has become one of the key materials in modern industry, especially in aerospace, automotive, 3C electronics and other fields that pursue weight reduction, energy saving and performance improvement, due to its ultimate lightweight, excellent specific strength/stiffness, outstanding damping and vibration reduction performance, good processability and electromagnetic shielding. Despite facing challenges such as poor corrosion resistance, limited room temperature plasticity, and high cost, its advantages and potential are increasingly being explored and utilized through continuous alloy research and development, process improvement (especially surface treatment technology), and rational design applications. With technological advancements and large-scale applications, magnesium alloy sheets are expected to play an important role in more fields.
